Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient practice of therapeutic touch the relaxes and de-stresses as it brings an individual's body to a more balanced state supporting the functioning of the immune system and relieving many symptoms of illness.

Is Reiki Safe?

Yes, Reiki is safe and gentle for all since a practitioner does not manipulate, diagnose nor prescribe medication.

How does Reiki flow?

The Reiki energy "ki" ( pronounced "key") flows through the palms of the practitioner.  The rate at which it flows is dependent on the extent of the illness, the degree of blockage, and the readiness of the client to accept the healing.  The practitioner learns techniques that help support in strengthening her energetic connection to the universal life force energy while also building her inner ability to hold that energy.  The client draws on that energy and controls the session energetically by their specific needs at the time.

I am currently enlisted in the military and I just returned from Afghanistan.  I have some anxiety and sometimes feel that I don't have control over my emotions; can Reiki help me?

Reiki can help you to relax and you may find that your symptoms are not as severe and that sleep and concentration improve after having Reiki treatments.  Reiki supports medical interventions while not replacing them.

Can I continue with my chiropractic visits and still have Reiki?

Yes, you can continue with chiropractic visits while receiving Reiki.  Reiki supports doctor - patient relationships and is often added to other modalities for the relaxing benefits.

I get terrible headaches from my allergies and my sinuses seem to stay clogged.  Is this something Reiki would be useful for?

Yes, Reiki helps relieve many of the symptoms associated with allergies such as headaches and nasal congestion, as it complements most medical treatments.  Reiki does not require additional medication, needles, or manipulation.

Is Reiki the same as a massage?

Reiki is not the same as a massage although both may be relaxing and de-stressing.  Reiki, however, does not require the use of manipulation,  lotions, or oils and disrobing is never required.  Many massage therapists learn Reiki so that they can combine the many benefits with massage.

I have a pacemaker and I wondered if I try Reiki will it stop it?

Reiki is a subtle energy that works toward creating balance in the body.  It does not affect any electrical appliance, including a pacemaker.

What is the best way to really understand how Reiki works?

The best way to know how Reiki works and how it feels is to  experience a treatment.  It is an individualized, positive experience for each recipient.  You may request a demonstration prior to scheduling a Reiki session.

Is Reiki a religion or does it have a religious doctrine?

Although Reiki is spiritual in nature it is not a religion and it is not based on any religious doctrine.  There is no belief system required for Reiki to work and most importantly, Reiki does not infringe on anyone's religious beliefs.

Does a Reiki session take away negative energy and replace it with positive energy?

No. Reiki is the energy of everything and is often described as universal life force energy.  In the West the two components of this energy are referred to as Yin and Yang with neither being good or bad, positive or negative, simply dual elements.  Reiki is a subtle energy that works toward creating balance in the body. Your specific needs at the time of your treatment will determine how the balance will occur as the two forces balance harmoniously. Labeling experiences restricts their energetic flow.

Can the energy from a Reiki session cause me any ill effects like make my condition worse?

Reiki energy does not cause pain or ill effects on any conditions. Reiki is safe and gentle enough for all populations.  It often relieves symptoms of many illnesses through the deep relaxation that it promotes.  To heal, you eventually need to face all sides of yourself including your fears and darkest issues.  A Reiki treatment can bring these issues to the surface and offer you the opportunity to take responsibility for your personal spiritual progress, letting go of self-condemnation and working toward balance instead.

How long will I feel the benefits from having a Reiki session?

A Reiki practitioner cannot dictate where the Reiki energy is most needed by you at the time of a treatment nor can she know how long you will continue to feel the positive effects from a session.  Reiki is an individulaized experience and your needs at the time will determine how long you will feel the positive effects. Clients with chronic issues often schedule regular sessions for pain management and many do the same for the wonderful relaxation and stress relief that they experience.

Why can't I just buy a book or a video and teach myself Reiki?

You can learn about Reiki from books and videos, however, to be able to use Reiki you must be open to receive the full effect of Reiki through attunements which are given only by a certified Reiki Master/Teacher.

Does Reiki have limitations?

Reiki\ energy is free-flowing, however, limitations in the flow can result from an individual consciously or subconsciously creating a blockage as a result of lack of trust or belief in what Reiki can do to improve health.

I heard that if someone has a broken bone they should not have anyone perform Reiki on the broken bones before it is set or it may set incorrectly, is this true?

A client with a broken bone may have less swelling and pain while feeling calmer if Reiki is given.  Reiki is a subtle energy that works toward creating balance in the body. There are no documented cases of Reiki mending a bone so it is unlikely that complications would arise from giving Reiki prior to a doctor setting the bone.

What does Reiki feel like?

Reiki is an individualized experience.  Some report feeling warmth, coolness, light vibrations, or just relaxation.  Whatever your personal experience it will be a positive one.

Is a Reiki practitioner a healer?

A Reiki practitioner is not a "healer" but simply a conduit or channel for the energy to flow through, although many clients argue that point after experiencing their symptoms lessened.

How can Reiki help my dog when he is not trusting of strangers?

Whenever Reiki is used, whether it is for a human or an animal, it is with consent.  Animals will let you know when and if they want to receive it and when they have had enough.  Some animals are much more sensitive to the energy from a Reiki treatment and may require Reiki be given from a distance.  Reiki energy is not limited by tme or space.  Animals are usually very receptive to the treatments and almost always thank the practitioner in their own unique way.

If Reiki is given to someone who is under anesthesia is it more likely that person will wake up during the surgical procedure?

Quite the contrary, Reiki is a subtle energy that works toward creating balance in the body, therefore Reiki would be supportive for the client as well as the staff by helping to induce a calm environment, greater clarity and grounding.

Who can take Reiki classes?

Anyone who is open to recieve can learn Reiki, even some children

How many sessions will I need to have?

The number of sessions required for treatment are dependent on what a client's needs are at the time.  It usually takes up to three one hour sessions for most to begin with and more for those with more serious needs.

Can my Reiki practitioner help me decide which supplements I should take for my condition?

A Reiki practitioner cannot legally suggest supplements for any condition unless he/she is also an M.D. or equivalent.  Although most supplements do not require a prescription it is always best to discuss the use of them with your health care provider first.  Many seemingly harmless products that are available over-the-counter may be contraindicted for you and could result in serious consequences.

I have Multiple Sclerosis, can Reiki help me?

Yes, Reiki can help by reducing some of the symptoms of MS such as frequent headaches and muscle pain. Reiki helps to reduce stress and promote relaxation and focus while working to restore the body's energy balance

Will my arthritis pain stop if I get a Reiki treatment?

The purpose of Reiki is to relax and relieve stress.  While it is often reported that symptoms to many illnesses are relieved after receiving Reiki there is no guarantee that after a treatment you will not have pain again.  Reiki can help with chronic pain through regular sessions and by working in conjunction with your medical care provider.  Reiki is never intended to replace any medical treatment.
